Unveiled in September 2020 by artists Gan Golan and Andrew Boyd, the Climate Clock initially showed that we had just over 7 years left to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and keep global warming under 1.5°C — a threshold scientists say is critical to avoid irreversible climate impacts. The clock updates in real time, with the figures changing every second, instilling a sense of urgency and highlighting the immediacy of the climate crisis.
Unlike typical countdowns that tick toward a celebration or event, this one counts down to a potential point of no return. If emissions continue at their current rate, the world’s carbon budget — the amount we can emit before breaching the 1.5°C threshold — will be depleted.
